The study of imperative utterances has become an increasingly important area from a cross-linguistic perspective. It is important to note that the semantics of the imperative is often objectified by means of different levels of language: morphological, syntactic and (lexical-) semantic. Accordingly, while expressing imperatives, auxiliary lexemes, e.g. imperative particles, are of considerable importance. These particles significantly affect the condition of successful communication among people in society. However, these words have the most obscure and ambiguous meaning and often have no direct counterparts in the target language, which usually engenders difficulties in translation and second language acquisition.
This research aims to shed some light on the functional and semantic characteristics of Tajik imperatives, incorporating particles. Our research has been conducted based on imperative constructions, which are selected by random sampling from the National Corpus of the Tajik language. Based on the corpus data, we have outlined some patterns and regularities on how the following particles are used in Tajik imperatives: kanī / ku (‘ну-ка’), okhir (‘же | emphatic ‘do’), biyo(ed) (‘давай(-те)’ | ‘let’s’), big(u)zor (‘пусть’ | ‘let’) and postpositive particles –chī (‘-ка’), -dija (‘же’ | emphatic ‘do’). Furthermore, we have laid particular emphasis on the semantic effects of using particles (i.e. semantic augmentation) in the imperative utterances and social relations (e.g. familiarity, politeness, etc.) among the participants of the speech act (i.e. pragmatic features). Another important aspect of this research is to provide a contrastive analysis of Tajik imperative clauses, containing particles by identifying their English analogues.
