Unskilled beginnings to From zenith in avant-garde — historical development of travelogue genre in Serbian literature Travelogue is a genre which has a long tradition in Serbian literature.
The first appearances of the travelogue prose is dated in the 15th century in so called «Hozdenijima», notes guide for pilgrims in their trips to the Holly Land (Nikon Jerusalimac, Gavrilo Sarajlija Tadic, Jovan Damjanovic Budimac). The same travelogue writing trend was also followed in the 18 th century by Jerotej Racanin and Jovan Rajic. However, the true travelogue values were more visible in the second part of «Zivot i prikljucenija» (1783) by Dositej Obradovic, where he, his literary described biography of his life in foreign countries, put into a function of enlightenment tendencies. A milestone in travelogue form and in classical travelogue genre in Serbian literature was made in the middle of the 19th century — in the period of romantic, in travelogues written by Ljubomir Nenadovic («Letters from Switzerland», «Letters from Italy»). By using epistolary form, common for travelogues, Nenadovic respected all traditional characteristics of the genre, making a balance among description of the seen and essayistic thinking through, current and historical, fascination by foreign culture and loyalty to national values which were becoming stronger outside the motherland boarders. In the work, development and complexities of the travelogue genre will be also pointed out, from the unskilled beginnings to works which respect traditional characteristics of the travelogue form, over aesthetic travelogue form in symbolism (the main representatives of that kind of writing are Jovan Ducic and Isidora Sekulic). Travelogues written by Jovan Ducic («Towns and Chimeras») and Isidora Sekulic («Letters from Norway») brought sophisticated travelogue expression, heedful composition form in which, the emphasized sensory sensitivity is connected to developed reflection on everything that had been met during travelling. In the epoch of avant-garde, precisely in the period between two wars, Serbian travelogues reached its peak, and from the margins, travers to the very center of the literature interest in the 20s and 30s of the last century. Almost all the most eminent writers (Milos Crnjanski, Rastko Petrovic, Stanislav Vinaver, Stanislav Krakov, Dragisa Vasic) wrote travelogues, and some of them are the best works of the Serbian avant-garde prose (Milos Crnjanski «Letters from Paris», «Love in Toscana», «The Book about Germany», Rastko Petrovic «Africa», «People Speak»). In the work, the connection between travelogue model and spirit of the epoch is also interpreted, as well as the avant-garde writers need for diverse experiments.
