Ключевые слова, аннотация

The work touches upon homogeneous and heterogeneous semantic shifts in the aspect of translation. From the standpoint of logical analysis of the language, these semantic shifts are interpreted as linguistic anomalies. Semantic shifts make it difficult to represent an author's artistic thinking and idiostyle in a different culture. Through a comparative analysis of the source and translated literary texts, three tactics of representing the semantic shifts have been identified and described: destruction, reconstruction and construction.

The work discusses homogeneous and heterogeneous semantic shifts in the aspect of translation. The first type includes such transferred epithets as hypallage and enallage. The second one contains constructions in which an attribute is substantivized and an object is represented by means of a noun used in the genitive case form [Мурзин, 1984: 48]. These semantic shifts are considered to be a variety of linguistic anomalies [Арутюнова, 1987: 3]. Semantic shifts reveal individual features of the writer’s artistic thought, their linguistic creativity and idiostyle, therefore, they are subject to representation in translation. In general, the study deals with the issue how the source text’s essence is represented in the target culture, which explains the relevance of the research under consideration. The paper examines how semantic shifts are represented in Russian translation of English literature, based on «The Forsyte Saga» by J. Galsworthy. The work classifies the semantic shifts which characterise the author’s idiostyle and the tactics of their translation. Moreover, the research corresponds to the current cognitive linguistic paradigm. Both general and specific research methods are applied in the work, such as logical, derivational, semantic, syntactic, stylistic, discourse, pragmatic, and quantitative kinds of analysis. Several examples from «The Forsyte Saga» by Galsworthy can be considered. Based on the analysis, three tactics of representing the semantic shifts have been identified: destruction, reconstruction and construction.
June stood before him, her resolute small face raised from her little height to his great height, and her hand outheld [Galsworthy, 2012: 8].
И Джун с протянутой рукой остановилась перед Джемсом, решительно глядя на него снизу вверх [Голсуорси, 2017: 4].
The character's decisiveness is actualised by the hypallage: syntactically, the adjective «resolute» is associated with the word «face», and semantically with the verb «raised». It is destructed in Russian translation.
Even Aunt Ann was there; her inflexible back, and the dignity of her calm old face personifying the rigid possessiveness of the family idea [Galsworthy, 2012: 4].
Даже тетя Энн была здесь: негнущийся стан и спокойное достоинство ее старческого лица воплощали в себе непоколебимый дух собственничества, свойственный всей семье [Голсуорси, 2017: 3].
Here the enallage is constructed. The adjective спокойное is syntactically related to достоинство, and semantically to the noun лица.
An analysis of semantic shifts representation in translation leads to the conclusion that these shifts pose a significant translation challenge. The reconstruction and construction of semantic shifts in translation facilitate a more thorough conveyance of the source text within the target culture, encompassing its emotivity and artistic linguistic form.
