Audiovisual translation of puns in animated films (a case of «Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir» animated series and its translations into Russian and Spanish)

The study is focused on the
analysis of official dubbed translations of puns from the original English version of «Miraculous Ladybug» into Russian, European and Latin American Spanish. The goal of the study is to
determine the most common translation strategies used in each respective case. The
practical material of the study is of high interest as it contains a
particularly large number of puns created by one of the protagonists and since their
usage is his key trait.

Translating puns has always been one of the biggest challenges for translators. Audiovisual translation of puns is an even more complicated task, especially if the personality of one of the main characters of a film or a show is built on puns. Such is the case of the «Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir» animated series and one of its protagonists, Cat Noir.
The relevance of the present research is conditioned by the interest that scholars take in animated films discourse. The novelty of the research stems from the international popularity of the show under study and the fact it has not yet been thoroughly analyzed from the point of view of pun translation strategies.
The goal of the study is determining the most common translation strategies that are applied by translators to translate Cat Noir’s puns. In order to achieve this goal, the following objectives are set: to define the pun as a phenomenon on the base of existing definitions; to identify the key differences between existing approaches to pun translatability; to find the key differences between existing strategies of pun translation; to establish what strategies are used in every example selected for the study and to make a general conclusion regarding all the examples.
The research is based on Е. Aleksandrova’s classification of pun translation strategies and the works of such scholars as D. Delabastita, G. Pisek, H. Gottlieb, T. Schröter, A. Veisbergs, S. Vlakhov.
The practical material of the study is comprised by Cat Noir's puns from «Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir» in their English dubbing and their official dubbed translations into Russian, European Spanish and Latin American Spanish. It is necessary to clarify that the English version of the series is officially recognized by its creators as one of the original ones. The examples of Cat Noir’s puns and their translations are selected according to the method of continuous sampling. The procedure of the research is as follows. After a pun is discovered in the original version of the series, its translations are found, compared and contrasted to the original. The total number of examples examined is 120 (including their translations into three languages).
The results of the research showed that the most common translation strategies used in the three target texts are generally similar. The most common strategy is game change, meanwhile there are also many examples of non-pun replacement. In the case with European and Latin Spanish, puns are sometimes translated remarkably accurately thanks to the fact the idiomatic expressions used in them exist in both the source and the target language.
