Test of Russian as a Foreign Language, TORFL, Russian as a foreign language in Brazil.
Тезисы
Discussion of TORFL sessions in Brazil would be of
interest for educators dealing with the Russian language abroad, as in this
country large TORFL sessions
have been arranged only since 2018. Such studies help us to observe how TORFL
becomes a part of the Russian language teaching in a new area.
The first large TORFL session in Brazil was held in
2018 by The Language Testing Centre of Saint Petersburg State Univeristy
(Russia) and three language schools: «Clube Russo Priviet», «Clube Eslavo» (São Paulo) and «Skavushka» (Rio de Janeiro). By now SPBU
Language Testing Centre and six Brazilian language schools have conducted three
TORFL exam sessions in the three cities in Brazil.
We carried out a survey to characterize Brazilian TORFL audience. The
questionnaire included yes-no questions concerning the candidates’ motivation
to study Russian and to take TORFL exam; their experience in other foreign
languages international exams; source of information about TORFL; exam
preparation aspects e.g. how difficult the tasks in sample papers were;
examination papers and procedures; the emotional condition at the exam etc. The
free-answer questions concerned preparation for the exam (textbooks, the most
difficult subtests), examination papers and procedure. 58 respondents took part
in the survey, which is more than half of all TORFL candidates in Brazil.
The survey is supposed to give start to TORFL impact studies in Brazil and other countries. TORFL impact studies would
help to promote the Russian language and to support its teaching overseas. The
survey results will help TORFL materials developers and will be used to improve
TORFL sessions in Brazil and other countries.
