Presentation
is one of the ways of communication with the audience, which can help to express
opinion on a certain issue, bring about questions, and inspire others. Students
of technical universities, who will be engineers of different specializations,
have to acquire the skill of making a presentation as part of their professional
competence. The aim of the paper is to show ways of effective teaching of
presentation skills at classes of the English language at the technical
university. Methods of research include study of theoretical sources, textbooks
in teaching the English language, interviewing students who make presentations. Development
of skills of making a presentation will be effective if the following
conditions are considered: audiences are various: students, master students,
postgraduates; formats are various: individual, team; types of events are various:
academic conference, contest of presentations, task at a class of the English
language.
Ways of training
presenters aim at getting additional feedback from audiences, mastering skills
of taking part in question-answer sessions. Thus, students can improve three
main constituents of a presentation: content, form, manner of speech.
Students
improve the content of the presentation thinking over questions asked, selecting
material for a team presentation, preparing for a certain type of event. The form
of the presentation is the text on every slide, a style of language chosen to persuade
the audience; after getting feedback from various audiences, depending on the
event, students can adjust their form of the presentation. The manner includes voice,
tempo, body language that a presenter uses while speaking. Feedback, rehearsals
for different audiences and in different formats can help a student to become
more confident in choosing the manner and the style of the presentation.
