Several years ago «The Nation» published an article, «Adventures in Neurohumanities», that discusses the expansion of neuroscience into the area of literary studies and asks a question whether it is a good way to read a novel (The Nation. May 27, 2013). The answer to the question is twofold, and can be sought theoretically and empirically. Enactivists developed the idea of an active perception that challenges traditional conceptions of perception and interpretation. Film directors and artists in their turn try to employ brain-computer interface (BCI) in their works in order to turn a viewer into a ‘second-order’ author. However, experiments in creating a model for active perception are not limited to BCI narratives, but embrace a wider range of approaches that challenge linear narrative structure and passive perception, e. g. ergodic narrative, cybertext, and interactive narratives, including perceptive media. The relevant questions include: What kind of character is created on screen in interactive and/or enactive media? What is the relationship between the character and the viewer? What is the role of the point of view in character building in experimental and traditional media? The paper examines the character construction in active perception through the concept of experientiality and seeks to identify its ‘basic elements’.
